A question I often receive is how artists are selected for THCT Curated Spotlight. The process is intentionally structured so that every feature reflects a thoughtful evaluation rather than a quick reaction to a single track.
Before selecting a record for Spotlight, I usually listen through multiple songs from an artist’s catalog. This helps me understand the artist’s direction, consistency, and overall creative identity. A strong artist is rarely defined by just one song — the body of work tells a much clearer story.
Because THCT highlights artists across many genres, the evaluation process is designed to work for different types of music. Some artists rely heavily on lyricism and songwriting, while others create instrumental, electronic, or atmospheric music where the focus is entirely on sound and composition. Regardless of genre, the goal is to understand how effectively the artist executes their vision.
Each Spotlight feature is evaluated using four key categories.
Production
focuses on the overall sound and construction of the record. This includes the instrumental, arrangement, mix clarity, and how the elements of the track work together. In vocal-driven music, production should support the artist’s voice without overpowering it. In instrumental or electronic music, production becomes even more important because the sound design, layering, and movement of the track carry the entire listening experience.
Songwriting
evaluates how the piece is structured. In vocal music, this includes lyricism, storytelling, flow, and how the verses and hooks are arranged. For instrumental music, songwriting can be thought of as composition — how the track develops, how ideas evolve, and how effectively the structure keeps the listener engaged from beginning to end.
Originality
measures how authentic the artist’s creative identity feels. Every genre has its influences, but the strongest artists bring something of their own to the table. Whether it’s a unique vocal approach, an unusual sound palette, or a distinctive production style, originality shows that the artist is developing their own lane rather than simply following trends.
Replay value
is one of the most important elements of any piece of music. A track can sound good on the first listen, but the real test is whether it invites you back for another play. Replay value comes from memorable moments, strong atmosphere, engaging rhythms, or compelling songwriting that keeps the record in rotation.

After evaluating these elements, I select the record that best represents the artist within the Curated Spotlight format. The goal is not only to highlight strong music, but also to document developing artists who are building real bodies of work.
